A Winter Wedding Morning at Preston Peak

Yesterday I had the chance to do a Day of Service for a lovely bride, Maddie. Her wedding was at Preston Peak, but since it was the quieter (and more affordable) winter season, she was able to use their two on-site houses for getting ready. One for the boys, one for the girls.

Normally they’re booked out as honeymoon accommodation during peak season, but winter gave us the space and the view—and honestly, the view was phenomenal.

The only downside? One hook. One! Thankfully I’d packed a heap of S-hooks (lesson learned long ago), and between the shower rail and a bit of improvising, we made it work.

I steamed Maddie’s dress and veil, plus two bridesmaid dresses, a flower girl dress, and the mother of the bride’s gown. The ironing board came in handy for the veil, and I set up my little steaming station like I always do—cords, snips, fashion tape, compact mirror in my pocket just in case.

A bride and a young flower girl, both in white dresses, walk indoors holding flower bouquets preparing for the wedding ceremony.

Maddie was pretty quiet—understandably shy and surrounded by strangers on a big day—but she looked calm and beautiful.

I didn’t get to know the photographer or hair and makeup crew at all. Sometimes it’s like that. But I did make a new best friend: a five-year-old flower girl who followed me around, chatted my ear off, and then sweetly asked if I’d be coming to the wedding too. I melted.

I gave her a little mirror and said she could use it to check her flower crown. She was thrilled.

I arrived just before 11am, and by 12:30 I was zipping Maddie into her gown. Then unzipping her so she could pee. Then zipping her back up again. The job, honestly.

But it’s these little in-between moments that make it special.

She gave me a warm hug before I left, and I drove away smiling while she walked down the aisle. I love the preparation part of weddings.

The rest? That’s up to them. I just like getting everything ready, making it smooth and calm, then quietly slipping away.
